Landscape photographer and workshop guide so the shooters map beyond the cliche The golden hour landscapes the hill country at DAWN is the prize the tea slopes around Ella Haputale and Nuwara Eliya with mist pooling in the valleys at first light shoot from the estate roads and the viewpoints (Lipton Seat dawn is sublime) the Knuckles and Riverston ridges in dawn cloud Horton Plains early the reservoirs and tanks of the cultural triangle at dawn and dusk for mirror reflections of dagobas and dead trees (the Minneriya and the ancient tanks) Wildlife light early and late in the parks the low golden light on elephants and the leopard the birds at the lagoons (the safari threads) the temple atmosphere shoot the cultural triangle dagobas and the Kandy temple in the soft early light and the worship hour candle and lamp light at dusk Sigiriya and Pidurangala at sunrise (Pidurangala FOR Sigiriya as the site threads cover) The iconic shots without the cliche the train the Nine Arch is shot to death so shoot it from the LESS used angles or better find the OTHER scenic rail moments the Demodara loop the high bridges the train emerging from tea not just the one bridge the stilt fishermen shoot them at genuine dawn or dusk light when a few real ones fish (be aware many posed setups now charge as the ethics threads note) seek the unposed authentic moment Working the harsh midday light the tropical midday is brutal and flat so do what the pros do shoot DAWN and the late afternoon golden hour hard rest or scout or shoot interiors and markets and shade and detail at midday the harsh light suits high contrast street and shadow work if you must shoot then The June monsoon skies actually a GIFT for the photographer the dramatic cloud the storm light the moody tea mist the rainbows and the saturated green are far more interesting than blank blue embrace the weather shoot the breaking light after a shower the low cloud in the hills June gives you atmosphere the dry season lacks The shooters plan dawn in the hills for mist tanks at dusk for reflections parks at golden hour for wildlife temples in the worship light and let the monsoon drama work FOR you midday is for rest and scouting not the hero shots

The Lipton Seat dawn before the cloud closes in is worth the very early start the sea of tea ridges in first light is unreal go up in the dark and beat both the crowd and the mist
