Best place to buy a Saree in Colombo?
I want to buy a nice Saree to take home. Where should I go for good quality without paying luxury boutique prices?

Go to "House of Fashions" or "Odel" in Colombo. They have massive Saree departments with fixed prices, so you don't have to haggle. You can get a gorgeous cotton or synthetic silk Saree for around $20-$40 USD.
Good point about the blouse! I will go to House of Fashions early in my trip to leave time for tailoring.
If you want a real adventure, go to Main Street in Pettah. There are dozens of Indian textile shops. It is much cheaper, but you have to bargain hard.
Remember that buying the Saree fabric is only half the process! You need to have the blouse tailor-made to fit you, which takes a local tailor a day or two.
Scam Watch: colombo
Driver claims the meter is broken and quotes an inflated flat rate. Common on arrival at airport or railway stations when tourists are tired and disoriented.
Drivers wearing official-looking uniforms claim to be "government-approved" and charge 3-5x normal rates. They may have fake badges or ID cards.
Women with babies approach asking you to buy milk powder at a nearby shop (not cash). The shop is run by accomplices and charges 5-10x normal price.
