Is it absolutely necessary to book the observation deck or 1st class tickets weeks in advance, or can I just show up at the station and get a 3rd class unreserved ticket on the day of travel?

If you want a guaranteed seat in 1st or 2nd class reserved, you must book exactly 30 days in advance when the government portal opens. For unreserved 3rd class, you can buy them on the day, but prepare for extreme crowding—you might stand for 6 hours.

I did the unreserved 3rd class last week. It was chaotic but an amazing cultural experience! Just try to board early at the starting station if possible to snag a window seat.

Pro-tip: If Kandy to Ella is fully booked online, try booking from Peradeniya station instead, or look for the morning train which is slightly less crowded than the midday tourist rush.
