Culture guide so the sari picture a lovely gift and experience Where to buy a good sari plenty of options for all budgets the big TEXTILE and SARI SHOPS in the cities (Colombo has famous large sari and textile emporiums with vast selections from everyday to bridal and the cities and towns all have good sari shops) HANDLOOM shops for the special ones beautiful HANDLOOM saris (locally woven cotton and silk often with lovely traditional designs the handloom threads) are a wonderful authentic quality buy (look for genuine Sri Lankan handloom) BATIK saris (the hand done batik a distinctive local art) silk and cotton saris at all price points What to look for and price for QUALITY consider handloom (cotton or silk) for an authentic special piece or a good silk decide everyday cotton (cheaper practical lovely prints) vs a dressy silk or handloom or bridal (pricier) PRICE huge range (an everyday cotton sari is inexpensive a fine handloom or silk costs more a bridal sari a lot) so set a budget the shop will show you the range a sari is a length of fabric (around six yards) plus you usually get or make a matching BLOUSE (the shops can stitch a blouse to measure the tailoring threads) buy the sari and the blouse piece The Sri Lankan drape yes there is a local style there are different ways to drape a sari the INDIAN style and the distinctive KANDYAN (osariya) style (the traditional Sri Lankan Kandyan drape with the frilled fall at the front a beautiful national style) so there is a Sri Lankan way (the Kandyan osariya) as well as the common Indian drape she can learn either Learning to wear and drape it the key part YES she can learn the SHOP often helps (the sari shops and the staff are used to showing how to drape and can demonstrate or help and stitch the blouse) a HOTEL or homestay (the ladies are often delighted to show a guest how to drape a sari a lovely cultural exchange) a tailor or a dressing service (for a special occasion a salon can drape it professionally) online there are guides too but a local showing her in person is best and charming so ask the shop your hotel or a local lady to teach the drape (and which style) Is it appropriate for a visitor to wear one YES absolutely wearing a sari as a visitor is generally seen as a lovely RESPECTFUL appreciation of the culture (not appropriation) locals are usually delighted and flattered to see a guest embrace the traditional dress (especially for a special occasion a wedding a cultural event or just to experience it) wear it with respect and enjoyment and it is warmly received So buy a good sari at a city TEXTILE or SARI shop or a HANDLOOM shop for an authentic quality piece (handloom cotton or silk is a lovely special buy set a budget and get a matching blouse stitched) note the distinctive Sri Lankan KANDYAN (osariya) drape as well as the common style and have her learn to wear it from the SHOP your hotel or a local lady (delighted to show her) wearing a sari as a visitor is a respectful and warmly welcomed appreciation of the culture a beautiful authentic gift and experience

Do get the matching blouse stitched to measure while you are there the shops or a tailor can run one up quickly and cheaply and it makes the sari wearable and complete rather than just a length of beautiful fabric folded in a drawer at home

The ladies at my homestay spent a happy hour draping a sari on me and teaching me the Kandyan style it was one of my warmest cultural moments of the trip so do ask a local woman to show your wife it becomes a lovely shared experience not just a purchase

Consider a genuine handloom sari for something special the locally woven cotton or silk with traditional designs is authentic supports local weavers and is a more meaningful piece than a mass produced one the handloom shops will show you the lovely range and the story behind the weaving
