Can I hike Ella Rock without a local guide?
Is the trail map on Maps.me accurate for Ella Rock? I’ve heard locals deliberately misdirect tourists or block paths to force you to hire them as guides.

Yes, AllTrails or Maps.me is mostly accurate. Some paths have been intentionally altered with brush wood, but if you look confident and track your GPS coordinates, you do not need a guide at all.
If a local truly guides you out of a tricky spot or thick brush, it is polite to give them 1,000 LKR for their time, but do not let anyone intimidate you into a forced tour booking.
Start very early (around 5:30 AM). Not only do you beat the heat and heat mist at the summit, but the fake guides aren’t awake or standing along the railway track tracks yet.
