I usually just tap my phone for everything. Do restaurants and supermarkets in Sri Lanka accept Apple Pay?

Yes and no. The physical card machines (POS terminals) in modern supermarkets (Keells, Food City) and high-end cafes DO have NFC contactless tap enabled, so your Apple Pay will work on them. However, Sri Lankan banks do not officially support setting up local cards on Apple Pay yet.

Good to know. I will definitely carry plenty of cash and my physical cards as backup.

I used Google Pay successfully in Colombo at a fancy coffee shop, but once I got to Ella, half the places couldn't even process my physical Visa card because the internet was down.

You still need a physical card and CASH. You cannot tap your phone to pay for a tuk-tuk, a local bus, or a street food vendor.
