Are there tea estates near Nuwara Eliya that let you go out into the fields and pick the tea leaves with the workers?

Yes! Look up the "Amba Estate" or some of the smaller boutique estates. They offer specific tours where you get a basket, go into the fields to pluck, and then they show you how to hand-roll the tea. It is much more interactive than the big commercial factory tours.

Most large commercial factories (like Damro or Pedro) just let you walk on the path and take photos of the workers. If you take a photo, it is polite to tip the ladies 100-200 LKR.
