Yes, hiring a private guide at the Colombo National Museum is highly recommended. There are officially licensed, highly knowledgeable historians available near the main ticket counter. Because many of the older exhibits lack detailed English descriptions, a guide will brilliantly explain the complex history behind the Kandyan royal regalia, the ancient demon masks, and the incredible stone carvings, making your visit vastly more educational. They usually charge a very reasonable, negotiable fee of around 1500 to 2000 Rupees for a comprehensive two hour tour.
