Hiriketiya cafes charge 3000 rupees for a bowl of rice. Where can I walk to find an authentic, cheap local rice and curry spot.

Walk out of the bay, up the steep hill to the main Dickwella road (about a 10-minute walk). Turn right. Look for "Roti Huts" or small stalls with clay pots in the window. They serve massive, fiery rice and curry buffets for about 500-700 LKR. "Garlic Cafe" is a famous, slightly tourist-adapted local spot just on the edge of the bay that is also very cheap.

Garlic Cafe is amazing. You just pile your plate high from the clay pots and pay at the end.

Do not drink the tap water they put on the table in the metal cups though!

Yes, very safe. Just go around 12:30 PM when the food is hot and freshly cooked.

Ask for the pumpkin curry if they have it. It is sweet, spicy, and incredible.

Perfect, thanks. I need a break from avocado toast.

If you rent a scooter, drive 5 minutes into Dickwella town. The Muslim hotels there serve incredible cheap biryani.

Are the local places on the main road safe to eat at.
