Cheapest way to fly into Colombo CMB from Europe in 2026
I keep finding 900 EUR direct flights to Colombo from Europe Is there a cheaper hub to route through Doha Dubai Singapore Kuala Lumpur Which airlines are actually decent for this and is the new SriLankan codeshare worth chasing

Direct from Europe is the convenience tax. The cheapest hubs into Bandaranaike (CMB) from Europe in 2026 are typically the Gulf carriers (Emirates via Dubai, Qatar Airways via Doha, Etihad via Abu Dhabi), with a single 2 to 4 hour layover, often 30 to 40 percent cheaper than direct and on better aircraft. Southeast Asian routings (Singapore Airlines via SIN, Malaysia Airlines via KUL) work well from western Europe too but add hours. SriLankan Airlines itself runs direct from London, Frankfurt and Paris and now extensive codeshares with Oneworld partners, so check their fares plus Qatar combinations. Tips: fly midweek, avoid school holidays, book 2 to 4 months ahead, and consider arriving via Colombo and departing via Mattala if your itinerary ends in the south (saves a long transfer back).
Watch the layover gap. Anything under 1.5 hours at a busy hub is a missed-connection risk. Build in 2.5 hours plus if you booked the two legs on separate tickets, since you would lose the through-protection.
Flew Zurich to Doha to CMB on Qatar, total cost less than direct Edelweiss and the layover was painless. The Doha airport is genuinely a nice break on the long haul.
A small thing: clear your cookies and check fares in an incognito window. Same flights showed me different prices a few hours apart, which is annoying but real.
Qatar via Doha it is, with a 3-hour layover. Big savings, thanks all!
