I know it is off-season, but I am an experienced mountaineer. Is it physically barred off, or can I still climb it?

It is not barricaded, you can physically climb it. But you will be doing 5,500 steps in pitch blackness through torrential monsoon rain, the path will be covered in leeches, and thick fog means you won't see the sunrise. The temple at the top is closed and locked.

Also, wild animals (leopards and elephants) reclaim the pathways during the off-season when the pilgrim crowds disappear. It is genuinely dangerous to do it alone in the dark during September.
