I land in Colombo at 9 AM. Should I hire a taxi straight to Kandy, or go into Colombo city and catch the train?

If you have heavy bags and are jetlagged, hire a taxi. The airport is actually 35km north of Colombo. Going into Colombo Fort just to catch a train back upwards towards Kandy wastes 2 hours and adds a lot of stress. A taxi direct from the airport to Kandy takes about 3 hours.

I took a taxi. It cost about $40 USD and was air-conditioned bliss after a 14-hour flight. Save the train rides for the Kandy-Ella scenic route later in your trip.

That makes perfect sense. I will just book a taxi to save the headache on day one. Thanks!

If you are on a budget, take a tuk-tuk from the airport to the Gampaha Railway Station (about 30 mins away). You can catch the Kandy-bound trains from there without going all the way south to Colombo Fort.
