Local so the connecting picture with an important caveat first the ferry situation CHANGES so verify the current status before planning around it Flights the reliable way FLYING is the dependable connection there are frequent flights from Colombo to many Indian cities (Chennai is the closest and cheapest hop Bengaluru Mumbai Delhi Trivandrum and more) it is quick and affordable and the practical default for combining the two countries fly do not bank on the boat The ferry the on again off again story there has long been talk of (and intermittent attempts at) a passenger FERRY between northern Sri Lanka (the Talaimannar or Kankesanthurai side) and southern India (the Rameswaram or Nagapattinam side) it has started and stopped repeatedly over the years sometimes running briefly then suspended so as of now do NOT assume a ferry is running CHECK the very latest official news close to your travel dates if a ferry is operating it is a fun overland feeling crossing but it is unreliable as a fixed plan Visas for India IMPORTANT India needs a visa for most nationalities arranged IN ADVANCE (the India e visa system for many passports apply online before you travel) sort your Indian visa well ahead it is not visa free on arrival like the Sri Lankan ETA for many do this early Routing tips a common loop is to fly between Colombo and South India (Chennai or Kerala) treat them as two distinct trips connected by a short flight allow for the very different pace and apply for the India visa in advance so the practical answer FLY (Chennai is the easy hop) do not rely on the intermittent ferry though check its current status and arrange your India visa online in advance verify everything close to your dates because the ferry and visa rules shift
