I am staying in Weligama for 4 weeks. Is it cheaper to buy a second-hand board or rent one long-term?

A daily rental is about 1000-1500 LKR. If you negotiate a monthly rate with a shack on the beach, you can usually get it for around 20,000 LKR ($65 USD) for the whole month.

Awesome, $65 for a month is a steal. I won't bother lugging my board on the plane.

Buying a decent second-hand fiberglass board here will cost you $250-$400 USD because of import taxes on boards. Definitely negotiate a long-term rental, it is much cheaper.
