I am petrified of crossing the streets. The traffic doesn't stop! Is there a trick?

Do not wait for a gap, because there isn't one. Walk at a slow, steady, constant speed. Do not run, do not freeze. The drivers will see you and flow around you. If you walk unpredictably, you get hit.

Hold your hand out with a "stop" palm facing the traffic as you walk. It sounds silly, but it works surprisingly well with tuk-tuk drivers.
