Silent, seated meditation is highly welcomed and respected in all temples. However, active yoga poses (asanas) are completely forbidden inside temple grounds. Temples are sacred places of worship, not gymnasiums. If you want to meditate, you must wear modest clothing (preferably white, covering shoulders and knees) and sit cross-legged so your feet never point at the Buddha statue.

I saw a tourist get yelled at for stretching on the temple steps. Do your yoga at your hotel.

If you want a truly immersive meditation experience, visit the Nilambe Buddhist Meditation Centre near Kandy.

Also, ensure any Buddha tattoos are completely covered up. They are considered deeply offensive here.
