We are traveling on a budget staying in local guesthouses. Do they universally provide mosquito nets, or should I bring a pop-up travel net?

95% of guesthouses in Sri Lanka provide mosquito nets over the beds. If they don't, they will provide a plug-in mosquito vaporizer or have sealed AC rooms. You really don't need to carry a bulky net from home.

Every place I stayed at had one. Just check for holes before you go to sleep. If there is a hole, use a bit of tape or a safety pin to close it.

Great, that saves a lot of luggage space. I will just rely on the guesthouse nets.

If you use the fan, point it directly at the bed. Mosquitos are weak flyers and the breeze keeps them away.

Make sure to tuck the net tightly under the mattress all the way around! If it hangs loose on the floor, the mosquitos will find a way up.
