I want to do a day hike in the Knuckles Mountain Range. Can I just drive there and walk, or is a guide legally required?

For the deeper trails, a licensed forest department guide is legally required, and there are checkpoints. For short boundary walks like Pitawala Patana, you buy a ticket at the gate and walk yourself. But the Knuckles are famous for sudden, disorienting fog. Even experienced hikers get lost. Hire a local guide.

Do not attempt to navigate it alone. The trails disappear into dense jungle. Plus, a guide will spot the endemic chameleons and birds you would walk right past.
