Can I wear shorts that come right to the knee, or do legs need to be fully covered? Do shoulders need to be hidden even while climbing Sigiriya rock itself?

For Dambulla Cave Temple, shoulders and knees MUST be completely covered for both men and women. For Sigiriya, you can wear athletic gear while climbing the rock, but if you visit the ancient monastery ruins at the base, modest dress is required.

Also remember that you must remove your shoes and hats at the entrance of Dambulla caves. The stone floor can get burning hot under the sun, so bringing thick socks is a lifesaver.

Just pack a lightweight sarong or scarf in your daypack! You can wrap it around your waist or shoulders before entering holy spaces. Dambulla rents them out but having your own is cleaner.
