I am planning a wellness trip to Kandy. What is the exact dress code for meditating safely and respectfully in the ancient temples.

The dress code is strict: shoulders and knees must be fully covered for both men and women. Wearing pure white is highly recommended as it signifies purity and meditation in Buddhist culture. Remove hats and shoes before entering the sandy compound. You can sit for long periods, but you MUST sit cross-legged or on your knees so your feet NEVER point towards the Buddha statue.

If you have a large Buddha tattoo visible, cover it up. Some tourists have been deported for displaying Buddha tattoos, as it is deeply offensive here.

Try the Lankatilaka temple outside the city for meditation. It is practically empty and incredibly serene.
