Our homestay host made an amazing looking cucumber and tomato salad. Is it safe to eat raw unpeeled vegetables in local homes, or should we stick to cooked food.

As a general travel rule in tropical climates, if you cannot peel it or boil it, avoid it. While homestay hosts use clean water for themselves, your stomach is not accustomed to the local tap water used to wash the vegetables. To be completely safe and avoid ruining your trip, stick to hot, fully cooked curries and peelable fruits like bananas and papayas.

I ate a raw onion sambol and was sick for two days. Stick to the cooked dishes.

You can politely say your doctor advised you against raw foods so the host does not feel offended.
