Nordic pale I burn through cloud at home so the tropical equatorial sun genuinely scares me How brutal is the midday sun at six degrees north does the monsoon cloud reduce the burn risk or is that a trap what is the realistic clothing and timing strategy and how do I manage the heat itself not just the burn for sightseeing that involves climbing hot rock at Sigiriya type sites

Coastal pharmacist who sells aloe to lobster pink visitors weekly so listen to the fellow pale advice The sun is genuinely fierce at this latitude the UV index runs extreme through the middle of the day far stronger than Mediterranean summer your home instincts undercount it badly The cloud trap is real and the dangerous one monsoon cloud scatters UV but does not block it you burn through the overcast precisely because it feels mild and you skip the cream the hazy bright days catch more pale visitors than the blue sky ones The strategy that works clothing first sun does the heavy lifting a light long sleeve shirt and a wide brim hat protect better than any cream reapplied imperfectly the local long sleeve cotton is your friend not your enemy in heat it shades and breathes Sunscreen factor fifty applied thickly thirty minutes before and reapplied every two hours and after sweating which in this humidity is constant the reef safe zinc versions for beach and water days as the marine threads note Timing be the mad dogs and Englishmen in reverse out early before 1000 indoors or shaded 1100 to 1500 out again late the Sigiriya type rock climbs specifically do at the 0700 opening the rock becomes a furnace by mid morning and the exposed staircase has no shade at all afternoon climbers suffer Heat management not just burn this is the underrated half drink far more water than thirst suggests add the electrolyte sachets the pharmacies sell (or king coconut constantly) recognise heat exhaustion dizziness nausea headache stop seek shade and fluids immediately the pale and overheating combination sends visitors to my counter daily and it is entirely preventable with the early start and the water discipline

The cloud scatters but does not block UV warning is the one I needed I always drop the cream on grey days exactly when I should not

Confirming the Sigiriya 0700 advice climbed at opening cool and shaded queue then watched mid morning arrivals wilt on the exposed steps the timing is the whole comfort

Local tip the long sleeve cotton shirt and a sarong cost almost nothing in any town market dress like locals do in the heat and both sun and modesty are solved at once
