Surprisingly, the currency exchange booths located directly inside the arrivals hall at Bandaranaike International Airport offer very competitive, government regulated rates that are almost identical to the city banks. It is highly convenient and completely safe to exchange your initial cash right there when you land.

However, if you want the absolute best possible deal, the private, authorized money changers located in Colombo Fort consistently offer rates slightly better than the airport booths, especially if you are exchanging large, crisp 100 USD or 50 Euro notes.
