Experiencing authentic Vesak culture between Colombo and Kandy

The best way to experience Vesak is to simply walk the streets of Colombo or Kandy. Wear modest, light-colored clothing (pure white is best). Join the queues for the "Dansal" (free food stalls) — locals love seeing tourists participate in almsgiving. Marvel at the giant illuminated Pandols, but remember this is a religious event, so keep a calm, respectful demeanor.
In Kandy, the area around the Temple of the Tooth is breathtaking during Vesak, but very crowded.
Do not drink alcohol before going out. The whole country is strictly dry for the weekend out of respect.
Scam Watch: colombo
Driver claims the meter is broken and quotes an inflated flat rate. Common on arrival at airport or railway stations when tourists are tired and disoriented.
Drivers wearing official-looking uniforms claim to be "government-approved" and charge 3-5x normal rates. They may have fake badges or ID cards.
Women with babies approach asking you to buy milk powder at a nearby shop (not cash). The shop is run by accomplices and charges 5-10x normal price.
