Exploring hidden gems and ancient ruins around Jaffna peninsula

Yes, take the navy ferry to Delft Island (Neduntheevu). It is a massive hidden gem. You will find the ancient ruins of a Portuguese fort built out of coral, an ancient Baobab tree, and wild horses roaming the dry plains (left behind by the Dutch). It is a surreal, off-the-beaten-path cultural experience that feels completely different from the rest of Sri Lanka.
No, but you should hire a local tuk-tuk or open-backed truck right at the pier to drive you to all the sites.
Nallur Kandaswamy temple in Jaffna city is also a must-see for Hindu culture.
Delft island sounds incredible. Adding it to the itinerary.
The ferry to Delft is an adventure itself. It is packed with locals and very rough on windy days.
Also check out the Kadurugoda Viharaya (Kandarodai) ruins near Jaffna. It has dozens of unique, tiny dome-shaped stupas unlike anything else in the country.
Bring tons of water. Delft is scorching hot and has very few shops.
