I heard rumors about beach clubs in Mirissa refilling branded liquor bottles with cheap local moonshine to save money during big parties. Is this true.

Unfortunately, yes, this happens at some of the less reputable pop-up beach parties. They refill empty vodka or gin bottles with cheap illicit alcohol which can cause severe methanol poisoning. Always buy sealed beers or stick to reputable, established beach clubs.

I always watch the bartender pour. If the bottle looks sticky or the label is peeling, I cancel the order.

The tourist police do raids, but it is hard to catch them in the act. If a cocktail is unbelievably cheap, it is probably fake alcohol.

Just order local Arrack. It is cheap enough that they rarely bother faking it, and it tastes great with ginger beer.

A friend of mine got violently ill after drinking cheap cocktails at a full moon rave there. Stick to Lion beer in cans.

This is why I only pre-drink from bottles I bought at the government licensed Cargills liquor store before hitting the clubs.
