We were at a bar near Habarana and a local offered us a cheap night tour to ride rescued elephants. This sounds incredibly shady. Are night rides legal.

This is highly illegal and incredibly cruel. True sanctuaries do not allow riding, let alone at night to entertain drunk tourists. These are likely captive elephants used for illegal logging during the day, being exploited for extra cash at night. Please refuse and report this to the tourist police.

Riding elephants is dangerous anyway. Doing it in the dark while intoxicated is asking for a fatal accident.

Anyone offering a "night ride" is doing it because they do not have a license and are hiding from the wildlife department.

Boycott any driver or bar promoter that recommends these places. They just want the commission.
