Family of 5 mid June south coast or east coast
We are flying in 14 June with two kids aged 8 and 11 and a grandparent My original plan was Mirissa Unawatuna for 9 nights but the Yala monsoon kicks in May and I am worried about rain and rough sea Should I rebook for Trincomalee or Pasikuda The grandparent cannot do long jeep transfers so 4 hours max from Colombo airport

Pasikuda is the family answer for June reef protected lagoon waist deep for 100 meters out and consistent dry weather May to September Drive is around 6 hours via the Habarana road so plan an overnight in Sigiriya to break it up Trincomalee is also dry but the beach is deeper water with currents not ideal for an 8 year old
Note that surf schools and most beach water sports shut on the south coast May to October so kids cannot do swim lessons or surfing there East coast has full operations
Add a 2 night stop at Sigiriya or Polonnaruwa on the way to Pasikuda breaks the drive for grandparent and the kids will love climbing Sigiriya
I was in Mirissa in June last year and honestly only 2 of 10 days had heavy rain afternoon thunderstorms mostly The sea was rough but Unawatuna bay is sheltered If grandparent prefers calm scenery south is still beautiful in monsoon
