We are in Colombo for Vesak. I know bars are closed for the alcohol ban, but is it safe for foreigners to eat at the free street food stalls (Dansal).

Yes, Public Health Inspectors tightly monitor Dansal hygiene. The hot food (rice, noodles, fried manioc) is incredibly fresh because it is cooked continuously for the massive crowds. Locals genuinely love it when foreigners join the queue, it shows respect for the culture. Enjoy the sober weekend, eat the street food, and view the illuminated temples!

Absolutely not! It is an offering (almsgiving). Trying to pay them would be highly offensive.

Avoid the iced colored drinks if you have a sensitive stomach, just to be safe.

Just smile, say "Sthuthi" (thank you), and eat with your right hand.

Sounds like an amazing cultural experience. Will skip the bars and hit the streets.

The fried manioc with sambol is the best thing you will eat in Colombo.
