I am bringing a sub-250g drone. Do I still need to register it with the Civil Aviation Authority, or can I just fly it on the beaches?

By law, ALL drones equipped with cameras must be registered with the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) of Sri Lanka and require Ministry of Defense clearance, regardless of weight. The process can be done online before you arrive.

Lots of tourists fly them at the beach without permits and nobody cares. BUT, absolutely do not fly them near Sigiriya (it agitates the hornets), military bases, or ancient temples. Police will confiscate it.

I went through the online CAA registration. It cost a few dollars and took about 5 days. It gave me peace of mind when a security guard at Nine Arch Bridge asked to see my papers.
