Friends in Colombo asking if they should drive up tonight for Saturday 6.28 - leave now or sleep
Just sent them a blurry tusker. They have no Kandy bed. They want to leave Wellawatte now, arrive at 1am, "find something," and stand Saturday. I think that is how people hate Kandy. Is a Friday 9.20 departure from Colombo a real move for a last Kumbal or do I tell them to sleep and come Saturday afternoon.

Tell them to sleep. Saturday is still a Kumbal (6:28), same 1.27 km streets, still thinner than Sunday Randoli 6:44. A 9.20 Friday night drive lands them in a city that is just unwinding, with Booking.com already a desert for this week, hunting a room at 1am. If they come, they come Saturday afternoon, park on Gopallawa / an official park, walk in. Not tonight.
We did the midnight arrival on Wednesday. Fine if you have a key. Miserable if you do not.
Scam Watch: colombo
Driver claims the meter is broken and quotes an inflated flat rate. Common on arrival at airport or railway stations when tourists are tired and disoriented.
Drivers wearing official-looking uniforms claim to be "government-approved" and charge 3-5x normal rates. They may have fake badges or ID cards.
Women with babies approach asking you to buy milk powder at a nearby shop (not cash). The shop is run by accomplices and charges 5-10x normal price.
