Getting a shave and haircut at a local roadside barber?
Is it safe/hygienic to get a beard trim at one of the small open-air barber shops?

It's an amazing experience! It usually costs less than 500 LKR ($1.50 USD). They give you a precise haircut, a straight-razor shave, and usually a vigorous, unexpected head and shoulder massage at the end!
Just ask them to use a fresh, new razor blade for the shave. They normally snap a new half-blade in front of you by default, but it's always good to double-check for hygiene.
Make sure you establish what you want clearly before they start cutting with gestures, or you might end up with a very short military buzz cut.
The shoulder massage sounds great. I will look for a fresh blade and give it a go.
