Event host who runs weddings so the real picture Can foreigners legally marry here YES Sri Lanka is a genuinely popular destination wedding spot and two foreigners can legally marry the marriage is registered and recognised The paperwork you need your passports and certain documents (birth certificates proof of single status or divorce or death certificates if applicable) and the legal registration there is a short residency formality and the registrar process a good planner handles ALL of this paperwork for you which is the main reason to use one start the document gathering a few months ahead so nothing is missing Venues spectacular and varied BEACH (the south and west coast resorts the barefoot sand ceremony) HILL COUNTRY and TEA ESTATE (a colonial tea bungalow or estate lawn with the mountain backdrop magical and cool) the GALLE FORT (a Dutch colonial villa or rampart setting characterful and historic) luxury resorts and boutique villas all do weddings choose the landscape that is YOU Use a planner almost certainly YES a local wedding planner handles the legal paperwork the venue the registrar the catering the decor the photographer and the logistics that are hard to arrange from abroad it removes the entire administrative burden and they know the venues and vendors get a reputable one with real reviews Cost compared to home generally a destination wedding here can be very good value versus a Western wedding especially for a smaller guest count the venues catering and services cost less though the luxury end can match anywhere it is the beautiful setting for less that draws people Blending a Sri Lankan element respectfully lovely and welcomed you can incorporate traditional elements (the poruwa ceremony elements traditional dress drumming the oil lamp Kandyan dancers) tastefully a good planner helps you do this with cultural respect not costume so the plan confirm the legal documents early choose your landscape use a reputable planner to handle the paperwork and logistics and weave in a respectful traditional touch and you get a stunning good value wedding in paradise

Factor your guests travel and the season into the date pick a venue region that is in its dry season for your wedding month (the monsoon threads) a rained out beach ceremony is avoidable with the right coast at the right time of year

The good value for a smaller guest count point is real a beautiful intimate wedding here cost a fraction of the equivalent at home and felt far more special than a big hall do the maths it surprised us

We married at a Galle Fort villa and the planner sorted every document and permit we just turned up the legal side was painless because of them do not try to DIY the paperwork from abroad

The blend in a traditional element tastefully point matters get the planner to explain the meaning of the poruwa and the oil lamp so it is honoured not just decoration the guests loved learning what each ritual meant
