I do astrophotography. Any locations with dark skies, interesting foregrounds, and safe access at night?

Sri Lanka has quite a bit of light pollution in populated areas, but there are good spots: high areas in the Knuckles or Horton Plains (with permission and a guide), some beaches on the east coast away from towns, and rural areas in the north or southeast. You'll need local knowledge for safe access at night and to avoid wildlife. Many 'dark sky' spots aren't set up for tourists, so going with a knowledgeable local or astronomy group is best. The Milky Way season and moon phase matter a lot.

We tried near Ella one clear night. Some light pollution from nearby towns but still got some good shots of the Milky Way over the hills. A guide helped with location and safety.
