Colombo has a thriving contemporary art scene. The Barefoot Gallery in Colombo 03 is a must visit. It frequently hosts incredible exhibitions featuring local painters and sculptors, and features a wonderful garden cafe.

For a more historical perspective, the National Art Gallery located near Viharamahadevi Park houses an excellent permanent collection of classical portraiture and traditional Sri Lankan landscapes.
