To avoid the overpriced tourist resort menus in Kalpitiya, you must head into the main Kalpitiya town center. Look for a small, unassuming local eatery called The BN Restaurant. It is incredibly popular with the locals and serves massive, highly authentic portions of fresh crab and cuttlefish curry for a fraction of the hotel prices.

Another fantastic option is to wake up very early and visit the local Kalpitiya fish market directly. You can buy giant prawns and fresh lagoon crab straight from the fishermen, and then pay a small local guesthouse kitchen a few dollars to cook it for your lunch.
