We are doing a trek from Haputale towards Ohiya. A lot of the trail goes through thick pine forests. Are there any specific dangers we should be aware of in these woods.

The pine forests (originally planted by the British) are beautiful but present two main hazards. First, the ground is covered in dry pine needles, making steep descents incredibly slippery, like walking on ice. Wear boots with deep lugs. Second, during the dry season, forest fires start very easily here. Never flick a cigarette or leave any glass bottles that could magnify sunlight.

Wild boars roam those woods. If you hear rustling, make noise so you do not startle a mother with piglets.

Also, it is completely silent in there and very easy to lose your sense of direction. Make sure your offline GPS is running.
