I want to hike to the top pools of Diyaluma Falls. Do I really need a guide, or can I follow the path? Is it safe to swim at the edge?

You can hike it without a guide if you start from the rubber factory side (Poonagala road). Use an offline map. HOWEVER, do not swim in the pools right at the edge of the drop. The wet rocks are incredibly slippery, and tragic fatal accidents happen there every year.

I hired a local village boy for 1500 LKR to show me the way. It was worth it just so I didn't get lost in the tall grass. And yes, stay away from the main drop. Swim in the upper pools further back.

It gets super crowded by 11 AM with influencers taking photos. Hike up there by 8 AM and you will have the whole cascading river to yourself.

Thanks for the warning. I will stick to the upper pools and won't risk standing near the edge.
