Homestays near Sinharaja serving wild foraged mushrooms and jungle foods

Yes! The villages surrounding the Deniyaya entrance to Sinharaja are famous for this. Local homestays often prepare "Heen Bovitiya" or wild fern curries, and during the rainy season, they safely forage for edible wild mushrooms (like "Lentinu"). Always trust the local mothers cooking it; they have generations of knowledge separating the edible fungi from the toxic ones.
The wild mushroom curry is incredible, usually cooked with a very dark, roasted curry powder and thick coconut milk.
Do not attempt to forage anything yourself while walking in the forest. Many toxic plants look identical to the edible ones back home.
Make sure to ask for Kithul flour pudding. They harvest the flour directly from the palm trees in the rainforest.
Also ask for fresh Gotukola sambol. The leaves grow wild all over the damp forest floor there.
