Tech minded local so the current payment reality the short version Sri Lanka is still very much a CASH society for everyday spending though cards work in the modern and tourist places carry cash as your default Where CARD works hotels mid range and up restaurants (the tourist and city ones) supermarkets bigger shops malls travel agents tour operators and many established businesses accept Visa and Mastercard (a small surcharge sometimes) so for the bigger planned spends card is often fine bring one (and tell your bank you are travelling) QR and mobile payment there IS a national QR payment system (LANKAQR) and mobile wallets growing in use you will see QR codes at some shops BUT it is mostly tied to LOCAL bank accounts and apps so as a tourist you generally cannot easily use the local QR or mobile wallets (they are not set up for foreign cards or visitors in most cases) do not rely on QR as a visitor it is a local system Where you NEED cash (most everyday things) TUK TUKS (cash mostly though the ride apps can link a card the ride app threads) the KADE and small shops street food and roadside stalls MARKETS and the pola local buses and most train tickets rural areas guesthouses and small eateries entrance fees at some sites tips so the vast majority of your daily on the ground spending is CASH How much cash to carry keep a healthy amount of rupees for daily needs (withdraw from bank ATMs the ATM threads) use card for the big stuff (hotels nicer restaurants) do not expect to go cashless cash is king for the everyday so the reality card works for hotels and the bigger and tourist places the LANKAQR and mobile wallets are mostly local and not easily usable by visitors and you NEED cash for tuk tuks small shops street food markets buses and rural life so carry plenty of rupees as your main means and use a card for the larger planned payments

I assumed I could tap and pay like home and was caught out the tourist restaurants took card but everything fun and local needed cash withdraw a good amount and treat card as the backup for big bills not the main method as Chaminda says cash is king day to day

One practical thing keep your cash in small and medium notes the big notes are hard to break at a small shop or tuk tuk and they often lack change so break large notes at supermarkets or hotels and keep a stock of small notes for the everyday cash spending it saves constant awkwardness
