I am packing for my trip. Do I really need to bring a heavy winter jacket for Nuwara Eliya, or is a light sweater enough?

In June, it is the monsoon season up there. It will be very misty, rainy, and the temperatures can drop to around 12-14°C (53-57°F) at night. A light sweater is not enough. Bring a fleece jacket and a good wind/rain breaker.

You can actually buy cheap winter clothes in the Nuwara Eliya market (Bale Bazaar). They sell export-reject winter gear for a few dollars, so don't worry if you underpack.

I froze in just a hoodie. The dampness makes it feel much colder than the thermometer says. Also, most colonial-style guesthouses don’t have central heating, they use thick blankets.

The Bale Bazaar saved my life! I bought a North Face knockoff fleece for like $8 and wore it the whole time I was in the hills.

This is incredibly helpful. I will pack a windbreaker and buy a fleece at the local market if I get too cold. Thanks everyone!
