I want to travel cheaply. Are the red government buses safe to ride, or do they drive as recklessly as people say?

They drive incredibly fast and the drivers brake violently. You MUST hold on tight at all times. But statistically, as a passenger inside a heavy bus, you are quite safe. The danger is mostly to the smaller vehicles outside the bus.

It is an adrenaline rush! The loud baila music, the flashing LED lights, the conductor hanging out the door. It is a cultural experience you have to try at least once for a short trip.

I'll try the AC mini-buses for the longer mountain routes. Thanks!

If you want cheap but slightly less terrifying, book the private AC mini-buses. They guarantee you a seat, have air conditioning, and usually don't drive quite as aggressively as the big red buses.
