How dangerous are rip currents on Sri Lankan beaches and which ones are safest for swimming?
I love swimming but heard about strong currents. Which beaches are safest and what precautions should I take?

Many popular beaches have strong rip currents, especially during monsoon seasons. Unawatuna, Hikkaduwa, and some parts of Bentota are generally calmer, but conditions change daily. Always check with locals or lifeguards before swimming. Never swim alone, and avoid going in if the sea looks rough or after drinking. If caught in a rip current, don't swim against it — swim parallel to the shore until you're out of the current, then swim back in. Many beaches don't have lifeguards, so local knowledge is important. Some hotels have pools which are often the safest option for swimming, especially with children.
Conditions vary daily. Always ask locals or hotel staff about current swimming safety before going in. Pools are often the safest option.
