How do you negotiate Tuk Tuk prices without getting scammed?
I don’t want to haggle aggressively, but I also don’t want to pay 5x the normal rate. What is the standard per-kilometer rate for a tuk tuk?

In Colombo and Kandy, simply use the PickMe or Uber apps. It gives you the exact local meter rate. Outside those cities, the going rate is roughly 150 to 200 LKR per kilometer. Always agree on the total price BEFORE you get in.
Ask your guesthouse host what the price to your destination should be before you leave. When you hail a tuk tuk, smile, say the destination, and confidently state the price your host gave you. 9 times out of 10 they just nod.
In surf towns like Weligama or Arugam Bay, there is a bit of a "tourist tax" on short hops. A 2km ride might cost 500 LKR. It’s a couple of dollars to us, so don’t ruin your day arguing over 50 cents.
Look for tuk tuks with "Metered Taxi" written on the roof, but verify they actually turn the meter on when you sit down!
