Can we see everything in Galle Fort on a simple afternoon day trip from Hikkaduwa, or should we spend a night inside the old rampart walls?

An afternoon day trip is perfectly sufficient. Walk the fort walls for sunset around 5:30 PM, grab dinner at one of the trendy cafes, and then head back easily via taxi.

Staying one night is beautiful because the crowds leave after sunset and you can experience the quiet, colonial streets early next morning before the midday tour buses arrive.
