Reading travel advisories makes it sound like everyone gets Dengue. How worried should a tourist actually be?

It exists, especially after monsoon rains in urban areas (Colombo, Kandy), but the risk to tourists is very low if you take basic precautions. Dengue mosquitoes bite during the daytime (early morning/late afternoon). Use repellent and you will be fine.

We put mosquito patches on our kids' clothes during the day just for peace of mind. Super easy and effective.

Just use DEET or Odomos cream. I lived here for 6 months, surfed every day, and never got it. Don't let the advisories ruin your trip.
