Guesthouse owner who guides lost guests in by phone daily so the navigation reality Google Maps accuracy good and the primary tool the main roads towns and the expressways are accurate driving navigation works well the major sights guesthouses restaurants and hotels are nearly all pinned and reviews help it is genuinely reliable for getting between places Where it gets shaky the tiny rural lanes the unpaved tracks and the very newest or smallest guesthouses can be mislocated or missing a pin and the estimated drive TIMES are often optimistic the roads are slower than the distance suggests so pad every estimate Addresses versus landmarks crucial point Sri Lanka runs on LANDMARKS not street addresses an address might be useful but locals navigate by the temple the junction the named shop the kilometre post so when you ask directions or tell a driver where you are going the landmark (near the such and such temple past the bridge) works far better than a street name and your guesthouse will give you a landmark and a pin not a postal address Offline maps YES download the Google offline map of your regions before you travel and around each base signal drops in the hills the parks and remote coast and offline maps plus your GPS still place you and route you when data fails this is the single best navigation insurance A better local app Google Maps is the main one and PickMe the ride app doubles as a reliable location and address tool for getting picked up Practical tips to not get lost download offline maps screenshot or save your guesthouse pin AND its landmark description in advance share your live location with the guesthouse when close and trust the landmark over the street name when the lanes get tiny ask a local everyone helps and combine the phone with the human and you will not get hopelessly lost

The drive times are optimistic warning is so true Maps said two hours the mountain road took three and a half always pad hill country estimates by half again

Runs on landmarks not addresses and download offline maps for the signal gaps is the mental shift I needed saving the guesthouse pin plus its landmark description from now on thank you

Sharing your live location to a driver or host through the messaging app solves the last lane problem they watch the dot approach and wave you in works far better than describing turns
