How safe is self-driving in Sri Lanka and what should I know about road conditions?
I'm considering renting a car. How are the roads and driving culture here?

Self-driving is possible but requires caution. Main roads between major towns are generally okay, but smaller roads can be narrow, poorly maintained, and have unexpected hazards (potholes, animals, pedestrians, slow vehicles). Driving is on the left. Local driving style can be unpredictable — overtaking, honking, and sudden maneuvers are common. Night driving is best avoided if possible due to poor lighting and occasional animals on roads. For first-time visitors, hiring a driver is often less stressful and safer, especially for longer trips. If you do drive, go slowly, expect the unexpected, and avoid night driving on unfamiliar roads. International driving permit is required along with your home license.
Roads vary a lot. Main highways are decent but smaller roads can be challenging. Local driving can be chaotic. Many visitors find hiring a driver easier and safer.
