Safety minded local so the honest picture be sensible not paranoid Overall VERY SAFE Sri Lanka is one of the SAFER destinations in the region violent crime against tourists is rare and the people are overwhelmingly honest warm and helpful you can walk around carry your phone and camera and feel at ease far more than in many places this is a genuinely safe friendly island Petty theft low but not zero opportunistic petty theft exists (as anywhere) pickpocketing in a crowded bus market or festival the rare bag snatch theft from an unlocked room or an unattended bag on a beach it is uncommon but normal precautions apply do not flash large cash keep your bag zipped and in front in crowds do not leave valuables unattended on the beach or in an open room use the room safe or lock your bag The common SCAMS this is where to focus (annoyance not danger mostly) the GEM and gemstone investment scam (do not be talked into buying gems to resell the gem threads) the TUK TUK tricks (an unmetered overcharge the your hotel is closed let me take you to a better one ploy claiming somewhere is shut to divert you to a commission shop use the metered ride app to avoid this the tuk tuk threads) the friendly stranger who steers you to a shop or a gem store for their commission the spice garden or shop hard sell inflated dual pricing (agree prices first the bargaining threads) so the scams are mostly about parting you from money via overcharging and commissions not theft a polite firm no thank you handles them Money cards and passport keep them safe carry only the day cash you need split your money (some in the bag some elsewhere) use the room safe or a hidden pouch for the passport and spare cards LEAVE the passport secure and carry a copy or photo for daily use (the left luggage and document threads) be careful at ATMs (use ones at banks the ATM threads) So the honest picture Sri Lanka is very safe enjoy it with normal city sense keep valuables secure and zipped do not flash cash and be wise to the money scams (gems tuk tuk overcharging commission shops dual pricing) which are about overcharging not danger be sensible not paranoid and you will have a wonderfully safe trip
As a local I would add keep your bag in front and zipped in a very crowded bus or at a packed festival the only real petty theft risk is the rare opportunist in a crush otherwise relax this is a friendly honest place and people will help not harm you
The split your money and carry only the day cash tip is the key one I keep a small daily wallet and leave the rest and the passport in the room safe so even on the rare bad day the loss is tiny simple and effective
Very safe with normal city sense keep valuables zipped do not flash cash and know the money scams (gems tuk tuk overcharging commission shops dual pricing) which are about overcharging not danger this is exactly the honest reassuring picture I needed thank you
A polite firm no thank you really does handle the commission touts they are persistent but not threatening just keep walking and decline and they give up the scams are about your wallet not your safety as Roshan says
On the your hotel is closed tuk tuk trick if a driver claims your booked place is shut full or bad just call the hotel yourself (you have the booking) it is almost always a ploy to take you to a commission paying alternative trust your own booking not the driver
I travelled solo for a month with a phone and camera out daily and never had an issue the honesty of people here genuinely surprised me lost items get returned just use the room safe for the passport and relax it is very safe
