How to handle language barriers in more rural or less touristy areas?
I'll be going off the main tourist routes sometimes. Any tips for communicating?

Google Translate with offline Sinhala (and Tamil in the north) works surprisingly well for basic needs. Download the language packs before you go. Learn a few key phrases (hello, thank you, how much, where is...). Most younger people in rural areas have some English from school. Showing photos on your phone, using gestures, and smiling helps a lot. In very remote areas, having a local contact or driver who speaks the language is valuable. People are generally patient and helpful.
Carrying a small phrasebook or having key phrases written down can also help. Many rural guesthouses have someone who speaks basic English even if the owner doesn't.
